100 editions of the escChat contest celebration idea

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. And Janet.

I have discussed with jw the possibility of a Congratulations-style escChat special and he has asked me to canvass opinions about how we all feel about it.

The core idea is to count down the top 10 (for example) favourite entries of the past 100 editions. This would be interspersed with recaps and live performances of songs and so forth that celebrate the diverse range of songs sent to the contest. I am aware something a little like this was tried with the escChat awards (http://www.escchat.com/threads/escchat-contest-awards.1732/), but I propose something simpler, with just favourite songs "of all time" and no individual categories.

We would also welcome chat community involvement on how the show should be organised and presented. The first hurdle is how to best take the 1000+ songs in the contest and make them into something manageable to rank. It isn't realistic to enable people to vote on every single possible song, so ideas on how to make this possible are welcome. One option would be to have people nominate songs - with either a pre-show vote, or live vote on the night determining the result. If people have other ideas let us know.

Other ways to be involved would be to come up with categories for recaps during the show, finding live versions of contest songs, even pre-recorded pieces from chat members talking about their favourite contest songs.

Whether you love the idea or think this is a giant steaming turd of an idea, let us know in the comments below, and helpful suggestions how to make it work are welcome as well.

Note, at this stage this is planned to run separately from the already proposed #100 edition, but around the same time.

Could a sizeable portion of those 1000+ songs be cut simply by culling any songs that didn't achieve x% of total available points?

For example, you could say that to be in the running, a song has to have achieved at least 25% of total available points. Alternatively, if you want to start with a fixed number of songs, you could take, for example, the top 200 songs according to their percentage of total points achieved. Following this, you could post that list of songs on the forum and allow people to nominate from there, or vote for their top 10, etc. etc.

That is flawed insofar as it ignores songs that slipped through the net, so to speak, but I imagine that that applies to a very small number of cases, and such exceptions could always be looked at on a case-by-case basis.

DO please note that you could apply a formula, but then also make sure that each (active) nation has at least one song in the list, adding them on a case-by-case basis.

That way, Chris, sok, Zunir, indeed myself, would still have some representation despite ultimately being shit at the contest.

ALSO note 1000+ is a slight understatement. Excluding special editions, and the upcoming #79, we've already had 1998 songs. We'll be well over 2000 by the time #100 rolls around.

The show isn't just about the "top 10 of all time", there are other ways to be included, like throwing in a small recap of the Grandad Club's toilets for example.

Even if we get it down to 200 songs, that is a lot, and would everyone have the patience to do a pre-poll vote on 200 songs? Or would say 100 songs be better? That's one reason I proposed nomination - if everyone nominated their 10 favourite songs I think we'd be well on our way to whittling down favourites in the group, as well as allowing people to throw in outside chances that might have been under-appreciated back in the day. The risk is some songs from earlier editions might not be known by the "newer generation" but we do have folks who've been around since the dawn with us too.

Oh dear, this is just opening it up to Genesis to come up with some mathematical gobbledygook.

There was an idea a while ago to select the best song from each decade. What if, with JW's permission obviously, we'd get that idea going in the next few weeks so we, in the end, end up with the top 3/5 from each decade to then turn that into a top 10 of all time after a final vote?

One thing I'm conscience of is keeping people's interest over time. I don't want 20 people voting in the first round, then 3-4 people left at the end, but in principle I like your idea Nick.

As of now, we have 24 active nations (the ones in #78, Black Daisystan and Furnyland) and 73 retired nations.
So if we want only the active nations to be in, we could have ~4 songs each. If we want both in, we could have ~1 songs per nation. (With 100 songs that is)
We could also make it 150 and have ~3 per active nation and ~1 per retired nation.

I think it would be most logic for the people to decide about their own nation
And we could decide on the other nations in two ways:
    - Results, being by highest percentage of point, or a results-point method
    - Choice, one person or a few people get (a) retired nation(s) awarded to select the best entry from, that way you won't end up listening to 500 songs
