    I am absolutely disgusted they're clearly using this woman as a political statement and then pass it off as 'oh, it's because Kyiv banned SO many artists from entering' - if Russia qualify, it's because of pity and not because of the song. This is on par with Chain of Lights and I'm sorry to say that.

    Seems like :ru: can't get a break this year - in another turn of events, it seems that the Ukrainian security service (SBU) are doing an investigation into Julia Samoylova's performance in Crimea, back in 2015 and whether or not it could bar her from entering :ua:. Don't you love drama? :baby:

    “Ukraine’s Security Service has banned Russian national Yulia Samoylova from entering Ukraine for three years,” SBU spokesperson Olena Hytlianska said in a statement posted on Facebook. “The decision was taken due to information that she had violated Ukrainian law.”

    Now the big question is will Russia give in and send another singer or will they pull out from the contest? My bet is on the latter. Ukraine should really get a grip. If they are hosting they should accept every country, Celebrate Diversity my arse.

    I'd like to just note that this wasn't up to the EBU, this was up to the SBU first and foremost. I feel sorry for Julia because she clearly really wanted to go to Eurovision and it's a shame that political influence plays such a big part of who and who can't take part in the contest but it's the rules of the country. I do think Russia had better choices on who to pick for the contest and I still stand by the decision that this was a politically charged entrant because they knew it would cause bad publicity on Ukraine's part.

    If Russia do pick another singer, I wish them luck - but I have a feeling they'll withdraw now, as it's been on the cards even before they picked a singer; and I think this will push them even further to maybe not come back at all.

    I also think this will push them out of the contest for good, or at least until Ukraine stops taking part for some reason, It's a shame that political things get involved in a music contest, specially on a music contest that was made to unite the countries post war.

    I still think Ukraine should get a grip on this situation and this is why countries like this should not be able to host Eurovision. Even Azerbaijan did not forbid Armenia to take part when they hosted (Armenia decided to pull out by their own accords). It's really a shame for the country.

    I'm on the other side here. Crimea is occupied territory. Entering that territory without permission from the country that should be in charge (Ukraine) is not allowed by Ukrainian law. Julia Samoylova broke a Ukrainian law. She entered Crimea through Russia, not through Ukraine. This law has the punishment of not being allowed to enter Ukrainian territory for three years. I cannot imagine Russia not knowing about Julia's performances when picking her.

    The occupation is the worst here. Ukraine feels they need a law for that. Whatever you think about that law, that law was and is there. EBU knew the law was there. If EBU had a problem with the law, they should've cleared it before even officially announcing Ukraine as their host country.

    What Ukraine has done is sticking by their own law. Pretending the law isn't there because you want to host Eurovision is a sign of being hypocrites. Julia is a victim here, yes, and it's sad for her. But the law was there. We all knew it was there. Either you respect the rules of the host country or you don't take part.

    Is Ukraine perfect? No. Is Ukraine a good host? No. But is Ukraine the bad guy in this story? Not in my eyes. Ukraine have stuck to their laws, which Russia broke. My gut feeling is that Russia were clearly going for this situation. Selecting a singer that would cause controversy whichever way it goes. Now they'll withdraw and say 'Look! It's not our fault.'
    In the end, EBU have made a mistake by not seeing the possible problems with the contest being in a country which is officially at war with another competing member state. Russia have made a mistake by going for a situation which would always make someone else the bad guy. And Ukraine? Ukraine are incapable of doing the hosting job right. There are too many issues left, right and centre.

    Sigh. Can we just get it over with?

    So Russia have now turned down the EBU offer of performing via satellite. They say they did not break any contest rules (which is true), so they see no reason to have a special way of performing. It's the normal way or none, it seems...

    My guess now is that EBU want to get May over with as soon as possible. They'll take action against Ukraine when they've made sure the contest is done.
