Sanremo 2020 (Italy)

  1. Anaconda I'm as sick as fuck.

The annual tradition of the Sanremo festivities is upon us! This year marks the contest's 70th anniversary.

Please find below the competing acts for this year. The Big Artists category is split according to the running order of the first Two Nights. Their songs will only be revealed live. The ones for Newcomers are hyperlinked below (lives from Sanremo Giovani). The title translations are mine.

    Eurovision
All artists were invited to communicate to RAI in advance, and no later than the beginning of the Festival, whether they were willing to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam. If the winning artist has not communicated their preference in advance, RAI reserves the right to choose the ESC representative.

A provisional top 12 will be decided by the demoscopic jury (selected music fans voting from home through an electronic voting system). Nobody is eliminated.
    - 4 of the 8 Newcomers will perform their songs, in a duel format: Eugenio in Via Di Gioia, Fadi, Leo Gassmann, Tecla Insolia. The two duel winners, decided by demoscopic jury, will advance to the Semifinal (see Fourth Night). The other two are eliminated from the competition.

A provisional top 24 will be decided by the demoscopic jury (combined results from the First and Second Nights). Nobody is eliminated.
    - The other 4 of the 8 Newcomers will perform their songs, in a duel format: Fasma, Matteo Faustini, Gabriella Martinelli & Lula, Marco Sentieri. The two duel winners, decided by demoscopic jury, will advance to the Semifinal (see Fourth Night). The other two are eliminated from the competition.
    - Notable guests: Tiziano Ferro, Ricchi e Poveri.

    THIRD NIGHT
    - Special event Sanremo 70, where all 24 Big Artists are invited to perform a cover of a previous Sanremo success song, accompanied by Italian or foreign music guests (among them, names like Nina Zilli and Francesca Michielin, but also Annalisa, Ornella Vanoni, Simone Cristicchi, Arisa). I won't include the list of covers and guests here, but it is available in full on Wikipedia. The performances will be voted on and ranked by the musicians and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra. A provisional top 24 will be decided by combined votes obtained across the three Nights thus far.
    - Notable guests: Tiziano Ferro, Roberto Benigni, Mika, Lewis Capaldi.

    FOURTH NIGHT
    - All 24 Big Artists perform their competing entries one more time. The performances will be voted on by the jury of the press room. A provisional top 24 will be decided by combined votes obtained across the four Nights thus far. Nobody gets eliminated.
    - The 4 remaining artists from the Newcomers selection who have won their duels in the First and Second Night will face each other again in a duel format in the Semifinal. The winners of each of the two duels will advace to the Final, where they will face each other again in a duel format. The other two are eliminated from the competition. The winners of the duels, and of the competition, will be decided by a combination of demoscopic jury (33%), jury of the press room (33%), and public televote (34%).

    FIFTH AND FINAL NIGHT

    - Superfinal: The songs making up the top 3 of the final top 24 will be submitted again to a vote, and will either be performed again, or a recording (in part or in full) of their previous performance will be played. The winner will be decided by a brand new vote of demoscopic jury (33%), jury of the press room (33%), and public televote (34%). The winner is proclaimed.
    - Notable guests: Tiziano Ferro (and maybe Zucchero Fornaciari and Ultimo).

Update (and background) on the Bugo & Morgan saga

Bugo has been around for over 20 years and he has a solid fanbase, but he was always a rather niche, underground indie singer. Despite his longstanding career, he is not immediately recognisable to the mainstream Sanremo public. He has tried multiple times before to participate in Sanremo and never made it, which was a great regret of his, and he had openly admitted this in many interviews.

Morgan, as you have understood, is quite the opposite, a flashy rockstar, former frontman of the widely known and successful Italian band Bluvertigo. When Bugo approached him to do a joint Sanremo project, Morgan felt (and some of the press/public also) that he was doing lesser known Bugo a sort of a favour - confirmed by the fact that they actually got in, as opposed to Bugo's previous failed solo attempts.

Both Bugo and Morgan are formally credited for co-writing the song, alongside other people. However, Morgan claims to have written it himself only, making him the star of the duo. Conversely, the song is included on a Bugo album, where Morgan is credited as "featuring" - says Bugo's management team.

Morgan became convinced that pressure was being put on him to withdraw and let Bugo sing alone, now that he had served his purpose of securing the Sanremo ticket for the act. He doesn't openly blame Bugo, he more says that Bugo was instrumentalised in this way by his management. His discourse is literally along the lines of "I showed him a gesture of kindness by giving him a song and getting him here, and then everybody wanted me gone".

For covers night, Morgan was the one who chose the song himself, and he also single handedly made the instrumental arrangements for it - a total of 9 rewrites. Apparently he kept sending rewrites to the orchestra, which the orchestra rejected, claiming them "unplayable on the instruments". Morgan shouted "sabotage!" and accused unknown persons of having fed the orchestra wrong music sheets. Because of the orchestra being unable to play the arrangement, no rehearsal of the cover took place.

Consequently, Morgan asked to be allowed to a) sing, b) play piano, c) conduct the orchestra himself. He was granted that, though grudgingly, since it is unprecedented in Sanremo for a competitor to conduct the orchestra. All this bru-ha-ha did not help his dynamic with Bugo, as the latter felt increasingly distraught at all these antics and complications.

Morgan equally claims that Bugo sang much more than his assigned parts of the song during cover night, taking over Morgan's bits as well. This is what he means in his modified lyrics where he says "the crap stunt you pulled the other night".

This culminated in what you know. Morgan and Bugo were barely on speaking terms backstage before the performance last night, and Morgan used that time to write the alternative text, which he then sang, leading Bugo to leave the stage. Morgan's comment was "I thought he'd play along with the irony".

Amadeus explained that, since they failed to take the stage and perform on the designated night, they broke festival rules by not providing the required number of performances for the different juries, hence were disqualified. They won't be appearing again tonight, not even as a guest act.

LATER EDIT: I can confirm I also read what Jan adds below. Additionally, Morgan said in an interview to Repubblica today something along the lines of "He wanted to get rid of me, instead I got rid of him, using my words, because he actually cares about being in Sanremo, and I really don't." According to festival rules, the act would have been disqualified even without Bugo leaving the stage, because it is not allowed to change the lyrics of the competing act mid-contest.

Thank you for all that background, Ana. I believe Amadeus has said the song was listed as Bugo feat Morgan, and if Morgan had walked off (and Bugo stayed) he would have been allowed to continue as he was the main artist. Morgan is clearly a very accomplished musician and no doubt suffers for his art  . I am just a bit sad as I rather liked the song :(

  9. Anaconda I'm as sick as fuck.

The winner of Sanremo 2020 is Diodato, with his song Fai Rumore (Make Noise). He defeated Francesco Gabbani (runner up) and Pinguini Tattici Nucleari (3rd place) in the Superfinal.

It has not yet been confirmed 100%, but it seems he will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam in May with this song.
