Estonia 2021

  1. Ronini SHIT Taste Central

Estonia’s ever-popular Eesti Laul makes its return Thursday 18 February. ERR will regale us with a total of three shows in order to crown Uku Suviste with a ridiculous televote lead as the winner. I.e. nothing substantively changed from last year’s proceedings:

Each semi-final features 12 acts. 6 acts from each will make the final. First the top 4 acts are voted through 50/50 by televote and jury. Then there is a second round of televote only to determine the last two qualifiers from the remaining 6 respectively.
The final will thus have 12 entries and work in a similar format. Here the top 3 are determined by a combination of 50/50 televote and jury. The superfinal of 3 acts will then be decided by televote only.

By my count a total of 5 previous ESC representatives among the lot (if you count Uku 2020). Ivo, Tanja, Koit and Jüri have all graced the big stage flying the Estonian flag before.

There are also between 6 to 8 songs in Estonian, which is a higher than usual rate.

    Anyway here are the shows:

    Semi-final 1: 18 February, Thursday, 5.30 WIM, (https://menu.err.ee/k/eesti-laul)

Thanks for all of your work, Norm - I listened to all of the songs in semi final one and came up with a ranking of sorts, subject to change, etc.

1 We Could Have Been Beautiful
    2 Kiss Me
    3 Free Again
    4 Hypnotised
    5 One By One
    6 Üks öö
    7 Ma olen siin
    8 Wingman
    9 Calm Down
    10 Tuuled
    11 Best Night Ever
    12 Find A Way

The red 'uns, I didn't like (Find A Way and Best Night Ever are pretty awful), the blue 'uns are varying levels of okay and then the top five were the ones I enjoyed the most. (shocker, imagine putting the ones you like in the top five)

Well how annoying, Rua has written the song names and I have written the artistes, which means I'm going to have to have a look and see what's what (but I guessed - and was right - that Find a Way was one I really liked :D)

I don't really know what came over me, but I decided I would give them a listen as I'm unlikely to get to watch the SF and wanted to be able to moan about 'my ones' not getting through when it comes to the final.

So this is my ranking and you have the benefit of my incisive comments about these offerings, and I have helpfully appended [Rua's placing] so you can see just how in-tune we are << The numbers in (brackets) are the times I made it to before I turned off. Those without a time (or comment about the time) I made it to the end of <<

    1. Ivo, Robert and Supernova - good old Ivo, still knocking them out [7]
    2. Kristin Kalnapenk - reminds me of something - doesn’t stand a chance [12]
    3. WIIRALT country - lots of banjos - got to the instrumental break and got a bit bored [10]
    4. Tuuli Rand (1:25) the Estonian Ace Wilder, a 30 year-old woman prancing round like a 15 year-old, but it’s not unpleasant [6]
    5. Koit Toome - whiny ballad, which doesn’t rhyme and I find that strangely annoying; strange video obv sponsored by Vana Tallinn with an old lady with a phallic ornament and a flying saucer o_O [1]
    6. Egert Milder (1:45) - Post-COVID twaddle but will probably do well [3]
    7. Hans Nayna (0:53) oh look, I seem to have forgotten to record any thoughts [5]
    8. Tanja (0:48) at least it’s cheerful [11]
    9. Karl Killing (1:27) dreary [2]
    10. Andrei and Pluuto (1:00) what on earth are they on about? [8]
    11. Kea (0:31) boring AF [4]
    12. Nika Marula (0:57) can’t understand half of what she’s saying but the other half is a song written by numbers [9]

So, having done the first semi final, I feel I have to do the second one too. I will also just point out that Rua had 4 qualifiers and I had 3 from the first semi final, so we're not doing too badly.

    Yet more incisive comments incoming:

    1. Uku Haasma - so here we have a man who appears to be wearing his mum’s trousers backwards and a pair of shoes he can’t walk in. Lovely guitar solo and not unpleasant song. Well you will be surprised to learn I actually liked this enough to listen again and of course, it’s all going backwards innit. As you know, I am a simple soul and have led a sheltered life.

    2. Suured tüdrukud (including sweaty armpits lady from the Seitse pühapäeva video, and actually the other one was in there too) - Written by Koit Toome and Karl Killing, who are obviously hedging their bets; Dagmar (S.A.L.) also sings backing vocals for Koit.- They have obviously taken inspiration from The Mamas from last year. Bouncy, performed well and a few extraneous men in the background.

    3. Helen - I nearly gave up on this at 2:41 but decided I’d got that far I might as well keep going. It would be so much better if she would lose the feathers and other assorted hangings and la-las and stop waving her bloody arms around.

    4. HELEZA - nothing special but bearable (and mercifully short at 2:46)

    5. Jüri Pootsmann - I kept waiting for this to get going and it never did

    6. Gram-Of-Fun - but only a gram. Do have a look at the chappy at 0:57 and see how much fun he was having. They presumably had to tie them to the chairs or they would have run off screaming (1:08) It’s rather generic

    7. Kadri Voorand - Is she of Italian extraction? I’m afraid I really couldn’t get over the horsey appearance. Yet another dreary ballad with a piano. (1:25)

    8. Rahel - oh gawd, another bit of generic tat (1:18)

    9. Sissi - another dirge with a load of bobbing up and down and arm waving. She didn’t wanna waste more time, and neither did I after 1:41

    10. Redel - Well, what can I say, it’s a couple of members of Winny Puhh, one of whom looks like Steve Wright and has a couple of lightsabers (sic) Not sure how far I got, but it wasn’t the end.

    11. Uku Suviste - This is just nasty. What a pity it will probably win (1:45)

    12. Alabama Watchdog - As I am at the cutting edge of everything Eurovision, it has not escaped my notice that there has been a right old brouhaha about this song. Their reaction/explanation seems to be a load of pretentious nonsense and they have, presumably, achieved their aim of getting noticed. I can well do without pandemic songs, whether or not it’s transphobic. With different lyrics I would have quite liked this.

Thank you for your insight, Janet - I did enjoy reading it. :D

Here's my ranking of this bunch:

    1 Gram-O-Fun
    2 HELEZA
    3 Uku Suviste
    4 Kadri Voorand
    5 Uku Haasma
    6 Sissi
    7 Jüri Pootsmann
    8 Suured tüdrukud
    9 Rahel
    10 Helen
    11 Alabama Watchdog
    12 REDEL

I decided not to colour code them this time because I found this one a bit harder to rank - other than the absolute shock that I actually don't mind Uku Suviste's song this year in comparison to his absolute pile of total shit from last year - I see Janet hasn't got much in the way of praise, I lol'd at 'just nasty'. Alabama Watchdog and REDEL are unlistenable to me.
