What should we do?

    HLO.

So I was wondering... where should escChat.com go from here?

Should we stay as we are? A core-focussed chat site for the Eurovision Song Contest or should we expand and become more diverse in providing news, reactions and everything else as well? I know we have a little news strip on the homepage (and the News link in the menu was never activated), but is that enough?

Put simply: Should we stay as we are in our chat-based niche or go mainstream?

What would you like to see added/changed on the site? How can we make it better? Where do we go next?

    And... why?

hm .. I don't know actually. I think on this matter it does need to be mostly up to jw as it is his site and when deciding the future, he probably knows whats best out of all of us.

So i'll hold back with my decision for a bit cos tbh, I don't have one :P

I voted to stay as we are. Many different countries, ages, mentalities, for this site to become something different. That's my opinion.

"What would you like to see added/changed on the site?" ..yeah the news bit! I see interesting articles on the news strip on the right and then I can't click on them to read more!

There's nothing wrong with experimenting with expansion as you wish and then changing back if you don't like it! I don't know where you'd get better news sources and unique reactions from tho!!! Zoooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

    ok

i really like our community, we consist of 500 members of which like 30 are constant members, i think/fear a mainstream-escchat will make this wondeful page SO much more wonderful, there will be many more laylas around here.

My only fear is that this my destroy the main-chatter-community (additionally their contest).

I voted: remain the same... im always of the opinion that if you are happy with something, dont change it. Ive seen too often people getting unhappy like that...

Im also " a fan" of some changes here, for example:
1)a possibility to see the last comments of a thread while writing a comment
    2) the news sector/mainpage has to get more attractive, as i rarely visit it... firefox saved /forum.php and /chat.php for me

I voted for us to expand, because I think that we could offer so much to challenge other sites. The Eurovision community lacks a neutral news site written by unbiased, level-headed people with a good knowledge of English (I'm yet to see a site fulfil all three of those!) and I think that in our group of members as it is for now, we can get a news team together to offer that.

With that, inevitably would come more members, which isn't a bad thing. We're a small community as it is, but with good moderation and perhaps more rooms added to the chat room (perhaps for off topic chat, Eurovision chat, games etc.), our friendly atmosphere and variety of personalities won't be effected greatly.

Expansion would also give the forum a boost, with some people maybe preferring to discuss topics in there instead of in the chat room, because at the moment, it serves little more as a promotional area for the contest songs and a place for small updates about Eurovision.

In conclusion, I think expansion would be a good thing for the site, because it can become a 24 hour bustling hub for all things Eurovision, which is what the community needs.

I tend to agree with Jack. I'd like to see new, genuine members come along and participate in the chat and the forums. I'm not sure the resources are available for us to be a rival to the other mainstream Eurovision news sites. I would like to see more use of the news/media sections on the site though, be it some core members giving their own reviews and news from their countries selections and news in their country and/or links to pertinent news on other sites as is the case now. I'm not sure about what the 'media' section might contain though. It is ostensibly jw's website, and I'd give my in-principal support for any expansion he wants to experiment with.

Also on the topic of the contest, more members will want to join and take part, so maybe special priority can be given to current participants plus a strict policy of selection for new members (forum posts? age of account? hours in chat?) and perhaps a waiting list system if the numbers are too many.

Variety could be added to the events held, such as quiz nights in the chat room or themed nights (much like our country/15 to 1/S4C nights) as well as forum events, which won't need such restrictions and can be open to all members.

I think that whatever happens arrangements can be made and things won't have to be too different (or different in a bad way) for the current members.

i wont stop you doing your expandations :D, no even help you, i just hope that this doesnt end bad...

    Scenarios:
-turks armenians azeris comming to tell us how great their national song for esc/culuture/instrument/... is

-endless discussions about who gets moderation access, people feeling mistreated by mods, people who are here for long time might feel mistreated with their new position

-"enough good english speaking" yeah lets divide us in good english speaking and "not so good english speaking" or just say "UK" and not UK? Interested how this will be treated...

If u think we can be THE site for Eurovision there is, im not the one who will leave for that or stop supporting you, i really only want to avoid a disappointment as we seem happy now...
  10. Jackeroo The Big Unit

With the English speaking thing, I didn't mean for it to be rude or like segregation.

We've had the Turks, Armenians and Azeris before coming spurting poo :P but it's part of the fun, I suppose. They're a laughing stock and they can't see it and it's quite funny.

With the moderation positions, I'm guessing (hoping) everyone is grown up enough to accept whether they become a moderator or not.
  11. Eurovizz Member

Well, I don't mind if the site expands and we become an active forum for Eurovision fans, but....really I am not trying to be mean or undermine this site's ability to become and run like a news portal for Eurovision stuffs, but I just don't think the mod stab in this site are ready and eligible to handle it. Also, the mod stab on this site are mostly teens, it doesn't make this site trustworthy.
  12. jw HI. I'M ADAM SCOTT.

That sounds more like oikotimes than escchat ;)

News would be outsourced and aggregated from reliable sources.
  13. c1ask0 Napkin of death holder

My only worry with the expansion of the site is that the family of friends we have developed will disperse and be gone for ever. I also think the contest would be ruined by an influx of too many new members.
  14. Arben The Flag Lover

how about creating a second, new webpage which we let grow immensly and keep this chat for us as a meeting of our "family of friends"?

then we see how things develop and can still change everythin...
  15. jw HI. I'M ADAM SCOTT.

I don't have time to manage two sites; the contest remains unaffected by any expansion plans. The eligibility criterion would stop that from happening, and I don't think it would result in a major influx of new people anyway (esctoday does news and how many people visit chat there? none) - it would just enhance the experience for our core members.
  16. Mina Member with a "past"

Do you think that mainstream sites have a video of naked men on the front page..that people can see if they click on the 'open your heart to God' label (which could be offensive to many)? If yes, then I wonder what kind of mainstream sites you have been visiting...looooooool

My point: You either have a small community of friends where you do whatever you like and because we are friends, we laugh with it (mostly :o) or, if you really want to expand, you deal with the whole site-thing in a more mature way
  17. jw HI. I'M ADAM SCOTT.

Rofl YAY you clicked it :D

No, you're right: such an expansion would mean that we'd have to grow up and leave the nobrain stuff just to Anette and EuroCusto.

The latter - EuroCusto (real name Jesus) is the reason for the banner going to nobrain. He loves Nobrain, he'll openly admit that. And Jesus is linked in with God and everything, so it's all topical and makes sense. :D
