Ecological Disaster strikes! Wodongarians forced to flee their native home!

  1. Liam Esterran.

    June 9th, 2010.

A supposedly dormant volcano on the Island of Wodongaria has erupted, destroying the entire nation and forcing it to sink into the sea. The sudden eruption and disappearance of the peaceful Island nation has been blamed as yet another effect of a devastating magical explosion eminating from Lusitania after their strongest mages lost control of their work and inadvertently caused the entire population of several countries to disappear. Fortunately for the Wodongarians, the Lusitanian mages were able to relocate the entire population with the majority of their possessions into the newly vacated lands to their north, the former country of Fusionia before any lives were lost.

King Lijam Klarkovic is said to be saddened to see the island paradise go, but optimistic that the Wodongarians can adapt to their new homes.

Formerly an Island nation in the southern part of Avalon, recent magic action has caused the entire population to shift to the northernmost part of the continent, bordering Lusitania to the south, and Furnyland to the south-west. Thanks to the work of the Lusitanian mages, The new home of Wodongaria is much like the old one in climate, with a warm climate all year round and an averrage of 42 degrees in the summer.
The most populous Wodongarian cities are most located around the north and east coasts, with the most notable exception being the capital city, Alburius located close to the center of the nation. Wodongaria has a large number of rainforests in the south of the country which vary from luscious and green near the Lusitanian border to uncomfortably beige by the Furnyland border.

    Culture
The main language spoken by the people of Wodongaria is English. The minority languages of East and West Wodongarian were lost when the population moved, and people just gave up speaking them. There is still enough of a Kristonian minority to keep Kristonian as a minority language. The official sport of Wodongaria is AFL, with 8 teams in the league, however Tennis, and Swimming are also very popular. There is also a small Soccer league of 4 teams in the league. Baseball is beginning to be picked up as a sport. Recent cultural ties with Lusitania suggest the advent of the founding of a mixed Lusitania-Wodonga Soccer league.

    Economy and development.
There are 4 main cities in Wodongaria and a number of small villiages, Alburius is the capital and largest city and is home to 140,000 people. The other large cities are the port city of Thurgus (82,000), on the east coast, Lavingtonia (105,000) on the north west coast, and Bandia City (66,000) on the north coast. The rest of the country is littered with costal resorts and fishing villages with a combined population of around 4500. and small rural towns with a combined population of 7000. Wodongaria's main source of income comes from tourism and the trading of rare and delicious fruits which, Thanks to Lusitanians, can still be grown on the new lands. Recent movement to the mainland and strategically more valuable lands has lead the Wodongarians to realise they may need protection and as a result have struck deals with Davis Island to secure protection if the need arises in exchange for an increase in Papaya trade and mutual relaxation of visa requirements.

    International relations.
Wodongaria previously had been neutral in almost all conflicts in the continent, mostly due to the lack of a military and the fact that only Kristonia faced it, rendering Wodongaria strategically useless. However, with it's new location, Wodongarians fear this may come to an end and are making ties to fix this. Wodongaria welcomes people of all nations to visit, but gaining citizenship is a tough process which was made more fun in 2004 with the invention of the television show Citizenship! where contestants compete a-la wipeout to become a citizen of Wodongaria. Interestingly enough, almost all of the show is filmed on LuLuLand. The Wodongarian travel agency "Travelz Yo!" has decided to keep it's former ferry routes from Thurgus to Davis Island, Kristonia and LuLuland, and are opening up new routes to Støkkanslåndet, Black Daisystan, Sheepmark and State of the Ark. Despite their new found mainland status, most Wodongarians refuse to travel abroad by anything other than boat with popular opinion stating it just feels wierd.

    Flag Design.
At exactly midday on the 9th of May, 2010, all government buildings lowered the old flag designed by King Lijam himself, and one minute later raised the new flag, chosen after a referendum in which two flags designed by the world famous artisan and noted flag designer David of Davis Island. The winning flag was voted in a landslide, with around 91% of Wodongarians preferring this design to the other. The king was said to have commented "This is much better than that crappy one I made". After pondering for a moment more, he added "It's in proportion too, that's nice!"

Lusitania was very generous! I like how the Wodongarians were able to settle in the desolate lands that the Fusionians vacated hehe.

Citizenship! is one of my favourite programmes to watch whenever I leave Barborderlos and come across a TV station broadcasting it! Sadly, I've yet to taste any of the renowned delicious and rare fruits grown by the Wodongarian farmers.

I'm sure they're sold at speciality food markets within Barborderlos! And Citizenship is in it's 7th season now and still as popular as ever!
