    UKAN Countries and Regions

The Kingdom of Atlantico was composed of former countries. Back then there was 4 regions corresponding to those former countries: Atlantico Norte, Macarronesia, Atlantico Sul and Lusoiberia.

After 10 years of integration, and a lot of hard work King Marcus Primus died without leaving a sucession.

The new king (King Aurelius Maximus, that was cousin to King Marcus) decided that everything that King Marcus had worked on was pointless and even more pointless was to keep the old countries names, and decided with it's government to merge the smaller regions with the bigger ones creating "Metropolitan Areas", so instead of the former 4 regions, only two Metropolitan Areas were created, Nordhala, (where was and is located the bigger city and capital, Atlantida) and Swevï (where is located the 2nd biggest city of the kingdom, Cambria). Also, by decree of the King the nation was renamed Kingdom of Atlantis.

Time proved that Aurelius ideas were insane and all the changed that he introduced just brought unhappiness to the people and huge ammounts of burocracy.

After the dead of King Aurelius Maximus, King Bruno II decided with the government that the Metropolitan Areas were not effective, and the name Kingdom of Atlantis was not making didn't made any sense and revoked all the rules set by Aurelius.

The kingdom went then (again) into a big transformation. Atlantico Norte headed for a Regionalization and De-centralization plan. The 4 regions (the former 4 countries) were again created and given their former names. Instead of centralizing every ministry in Atlantida, it was decided that every region should have an equal ammount of ministries and that only the Senate should be located on the main city, Atlantida. And the kingdom got a new name... United Kingdom of Atlântico Norte.

Beside this Regionalization efforts, Atlantico Norte had another problem, how to deal with the newfound lands? The answer was to create Autonomous Regions for each newfownd land and that each A.R. should have it's own Regional Senate where the the national laws could be changed to meet the local needs. So after a law is voted on the National Senate (where all the Regions and Autonomous Regions are represented), the law has to be discussed on the Regional Senate of each Autonomous Region and if the law needs any change, the Regional Senate have to send a proposition for changing that law to the Constitutional Bureau to see if that change can be accepted or if it is anti-constitutional.

The only laws that cannot be changed are the Royal Decrees that are the same in all Regions and Autonomous Regions.

The representatives from the Regional Senates (1 for each Autonomous Region) together with the representatives of the Atlantico Norte 4 Regions form the Kingdom Council. This Kingdom Council is only called when the kingdom is in danged or 1 month before every election.

The actual ruler King Miguel II decided not to change anything related to how regions work because he felt that there was no need.

UPDATE: Recently and due to a national referendum the people decided to revert the name of the regions to the pre-monarchy names. So the regions are now renames as follow:

    United Kingdom Parliament:

The United Kingdom Parliament has 299 seats.

    Political Parties:
EU - Esquerda Unida - United left-wing (Extremist Left)
PR - Partido Reformista - Reformist Party (Left) (2006 New Party)
PC- Partido Comunista - Communist Party (Left) (Former AN and Macaronesia Comunist Party)
PS- Partido Socialista - Socialist Party - (Center Left)
PSL- Partido Liberal - Liberal Party - (Center) (Former Socialist Liberal Party)
PE - Partido Ecologista - Ecologist Party (Center)
SD- Sociais Democratas - Social-democrats party (Center Right)
PP - Partido Popular - People's Party (Right)
PF - Partido Fascista - Fascist Party (Extremist Right) (2006 New Party)
BD- Bloco de Direita - Right-wing block (Extremist Right)

    Elections

In 2006 the parliament was constituted on the following way:

    PS- 37%
    SD- 12%
    PSL- 21%
    PCANM- 9%
    BD- 5%
    EU - 6%
    PE - 9%
    PP - 1%

After the ellections an alliance was formed between the PS and PSL and both parties rule with absolute majority in the parliament.

On the previous elections, in 2002, there was some trouble where it was found a tie between two parties. The Socialist Party and the Liberal Party decided not to form any post-elections alliances due to problems between the two parties leaders, and king was forced to dissolve the parliament and ask for 2nd term of elections allowing the parties to form pre-elections alliances up to three parties (normally only post-elections alliances are allowed).

    1st Turn
    EU - Esquerda Unida - 3,20%
    PR - Partido Reformista - 0,75%
    PC- Partido Comunista - 7,35%
    PS- Partido Socialista - 21,69%
    PL- Partido Liberal - 21,51%
    PE - Partido Ecologista - 21,20%
    SD- Sociais Democratas - 21,03%
    PP - Partido Popular - 0,52%
    PF - Partido Fascista - 0,74%
BD- Bloco de Direita - 2,01%

On the second turn the following alliances were formed:
    EU+PC+PR (Esquerda Unida + Partido Comunista + Partido Reformista ) - (1st turn sum - 11.30%)
    PS+PE (Partido Socialista + Partido Ecologista) - (1st turn sum - 42.89%)
    PL+SD+PP (Partido Liberal + Sociais Democratas + Partido Popular) (1st turn sum - 43.06%)
    PF+BD (Partido Fascista + Bloco de Direita) (1st turn sum - 2.75%)

But again the results were unexpected, mainly because the people didn't like the PL+SD+PP alliance. Why? Because the PP was a very unpopular party and it was the main reason why that alliance failed on what they were expecting, to win the elections. So the results for the 2nd turn were the following:

    2nd Turn:
    EU+PC+PR - 21,09% (+ 9,79% than the 1st turn)
    PS+PE - 53,38% (+ 10,49 than the 1st turn)
    PL+SD+PP - 18,24% ( - 24,82 than the 1st turn)
    PF+BD - 7,29% (+ 4,54 than the 1st turn)

The PS+PE alliance was elected then with the absolute majority of 53.38%, making Lady Rosa Gloria the prime-minister of the UKAN until 2006.

    Tradicional Dishes:

Cozido Atlântico (Atlantic Stew) - is one of the most traditional dishes of the Atlantico Norte cuisine, a stew made from the shin of beef, served without the liquid and made from boiled white cabbage, carrots, turnips, Atlantic smoked sausages (morcela, farinheira and chouriço) and rice. Other types of meat may also be used.

Feijoada Atlântica (Atlantic Feijoada) - The basic ingredients of Atlantic feijoada are beans and (fresh) pork or beef meat. In Northwest AN (chiefly Miño and Littoral), it is usually made with white beans; whereas in the Northeast (Montañias) it is generally prepared with red (kidney) beans, and includes other vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots and cabbage. The stew is best prepared over slow fire in a thick clay pot.
Atlantic feijoada is usually served with rice and a rich assortment of sausages, such as chouriço de carne, morcela (a blood sausage), farinheira, and others. The sausages may or may not be cooked in the stew. It is usually served with red wine or water.

Quindim is a popular Macaronesian baked dessert, made chiefly from sugar, egg yolks, and ground coconut. It is a custard and usually presented as an upturned cup with a glistening surface and intensely yellow color.

Pastel de Nata (Cream Custards) is a small cream tart found throughout Atlantico Norte pastry shops or cafés. It is believed that it was created before the 18th century by Catholic Sisters at the Jerónimos Monastery in Atlântida.

    TV in Atlantico Norte

    TV in Atlantico Norte

Atlantico Norte has done it's analogic switch-off in May 13th 2004. Since then the free channels are aired thru a digital platform called Broadvision.

Broadvision is a promotional company that coordinates the provision of set-top boxes and advertising for the free digital terrestrial television in the UKAN. Broadvision does not provide any television services itself, but it does promote changes and upgrades to the system, such as the introduction high definition MPEG4 broadcasts instead of older MPEG2.

Recently and due to the upgrades to the system and the introduction of the MPEG4 standard replacing the older MPEG2, Broadvision promoted a "trade-in" program where the UKAN's citizens could trade their old boxes no matter how old they were for a new one for only 5Ç (aprox. 7.5€). The new boxes beside the superior image quality also support new features like interactive TV, electronic program guide and recording up to 60 hours (base model).

There are only 3 companies that are allowed to use Broadvision's platform. These companies are ANTV Networks (part of the Royal Telecom Group and state-owned), plusTV (part of the AtlanticPress group and it was the first private station on the UKAN) and WizTV (part of the Wizcom group).

These 3 groups broadcast 27 TV channels to the Broadvision platform. There are also another smaller regional networks that have special agreements with these groups and also broadcast their signal to the Broadvision platform (but these channels can only be watched on their home regions), that's why the number of free channels avaliable change from region to region, from as few as 32 in north-eastern Lusoiberia to over 60 in central Atlantico Norte (region) and Macaronesia.

Let's focus on the main 3 groups:

ANTV Networks have the biggest market share on the UKAN and broadcast 10 channels on the Broadvision digital platform.

    These channels are:
ANTV1 - ANTV1 is the first television channel of ANTV Networks, the Atlantico Norte public broadcasting corporation. This is the first television channel ever launched on UKAN, back in 1942. ANTV2 - ANTV2 is the second television channel of ANTV Networks. Commonly referred as the "Second Channel", or simply "Dois", this historically state-run television channel started its regular broadcasting on December 25, 1948. Nowadays, ANTV2 is a public service, advertising-free channel that serves as an alternative to the mainstream channel of ANTV, ANTV1. ANTV2 aims at less mainstream and more intellectual content. ANTV2 is presently the only of several Atlantean and Avalonean national/international channels that has a strict cultural and educational programming.

ANTV Entertainment - AE is a general entertainment channel broadcasting in the UKAN. On this channel you can find the latest national and international television series and movies 24/7.

ANTV4 - ANTV4 main focus are lifestyle programmes targeted at women. There you can find all kinds of contents from series to talkshows, from how to cook to the tips on how to get a job... or get a date.

ANNN - Atlantico Norte News Network - ANNN (also referred to as the ANTV News) is the ANTV's 24 hour rolling news television channel in UKAN. The channel launched as ANTV24 on 31 December 1999 at 23:00 as part of the ANTV's's foray into digital domestic television channels, becoming the first competitor to PlusNews, which had been running since 1990.

Atlantis - Atlantis is a channel specialized in children's entertainment television programming through original series and movies as well as third party programming. It is marketed to mostly children; however, in recent years the orientation of viewers has shifted to attract teen audiences and started broadcasting 24/7.

MacTV1 - MacTV1 is a television channel owned by ANTV Networks, but managed by Macaronesian national broadcaster MacTV along with its sister channel MacTV2. Launched on October 1956, it was the first television service to ever operate in Macaronesia.
Its programming is aimed to a wide-range of audiences and includes news, documentaries, debate programmes and entertainment shows. Even though MacTV1 is state-owned, it does show adverts in order to fund itself.

MacTV2 - MacTV2, is Macaronesia's second state-owned television channel for the public broadcasting service. Its first broadcast was on November, 1966. Unlike sister channel MacTV1, it is not an overtly populist channel, and is famous for a more "intellectual" style of programming (often popular with university students) featuring wildlife documentaries, classic films from home and abroad, more "alternative" TV series, investigative reporting and the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest.

ANTV International - ANTV Internacional is an internationally - broadcast English/Portuguese/Macaronesian language channel run by Atlantico Norte national broadcaster, ANTV. Programming includes a mix of news, discussion-based programmes and drama and documentaries from ANTV's (ANTV1 and ANTV2) as well MacTV's (MacTV1 and MacTV2) networks. It was launched in 1989.

ANTV Fast Forward - ANTV Fast Forward is a joint venture between ANTV and RTG Ozone where by using a multi-platform system (Phone, SMS, Internet) it allows the viewers to interact with the channel, choose their favourite shows and encourage more people to have their own expression and thought on the TV chats.

WizTV it's the 3rd big television network and media company on the UKAN, which runs several television channels and a IPTV platform. It's flagship channel is WizOne (sometimes pronnounces as Wise One), the fourth terrestrial television station to be born on the UKAN, launched on December, 1989. WizTV is owned by one of the biggest financial groups on the UKAN, WizGroup, that also owns WizCom, AstraNews, and the Banco Macaronesio de Investimento / Macaronesian Investment Bank (BMI/MIB).

    WizOne
WizOne was the second private UKAN's TV channel to be launched, after PlusOne being launched ten months before. Under the name TV4, in which the 4 was the sole element of its logo, TV4 was initially owned by some prominent Church institutions, including Rádio Renascer, UKAN's Christian University, Universal Church Broadcasting and many other media enterprises were minor stakeholders of TV4. This majority-Christian ownership influenced TV4 programming according to Christian values. In the first years of its existence, TV4 assumed the role of an 'alternative' television broadcaster, dedicating part of its airtime to distinct target audiences, with part of the morning dedicated to housekeepers and the elderly and part of the afternoon to the young.
TV4's recovery happened when it was totally acquired by WizGroup in 1999, one of the most important financial conglomerates on the UKAN, and then it started broadcasting more locally-produced programmes, like soap operas. This helped to increase its viewership significantly, but it was in September 2000, when the Big Brother contest started, that TV4 (then rebranded as WizOne) gained a boost in popularity.
Now WizOne is known for having a large number of national reality shows and soap operas. WizOne broadcasts a mix of local productions, like soap operas, family series and reality shows, news programs and international movies and series.

    WizTwo
WizTwo was launched in 1998 as TV4+1, originally only to offer TV4 programming in later hours. When TV4 was aquired by WizGroup this channel was subsequently renamed to WizTwo and became a youth-oriented channel, airing programs oriented to a teen audience, such as international tv shows.
Channel programming consists of local programs as well as a wide range of American prime time shows. WizTwo usually airs these in multi audio (english, portuguese and macaronesian), as well offering the original spoken language. While WizOne is considered to be the channel that airs more local programming, infotainment and other programs of that nature, WizTwo concentrates on airing high quality prime time shows and other more entertaining programs.

    WizThree / WizU
WizThree/WizU (the latter word is an acronym for University) was founded in 2000, broadcasts 24/7, and features formal and informal educational programs, college-related fare and international news focusing on science and arts.
This channel is also the Home of Atlantico Norte Adult Learning Service (ANALS) telecourses for college credit and foreign language instruction.

    WizFour / Knowledge Channel
WizFour / Knowledge Channel is a channel with programming about history, natural history, engineering and crime.
The channel was initially known as WizTV Civilisation and was devoted to documentaries regarding history and civilizations, historic, ancient or present. On 1 November 2004, WizTV Civilisations was re-branded as WizFour / Knowledge Channel.

    WizNews 24
WizNews is a 24 hour international news service with an emphasis on the UKAN and international news stories. The service places emphasis on rolling news, including the latest breaking news. WizNews also hosts localised versions of the channel in Lantea, Atlantico Sul, Macaronesia and in Lusoiberia.
WizNews has built its schedule around the main, highly experienced anchors with appointment to view broadcasts regularly being supplemented by landmark broadcasts. WizNews is famous for its innovations in news broadcasting and regularly wins awards for this and also for its broadcasting in general.

    WizM / MacaronesiaTV

    WizSports

STPM acquires sixty per cent of Comboios do Atlântico.

STPM acquires sixty per cent of Comboios do Atlântico.

STPM - Sociedade de Transportes Públicos da Macaronesia S.A. has acquired 60 per cent of the railway company Comboios do Atlântico S.A., which is headquartered in Atlântida on the region of Lantea. This aquisition of Comboios do Atlântico will form a bridgehead for STPM's future activities on the national market of Atlantico Norte, which is one of Avalon's largest tendering markets. STPM will use Comboios do Atlântico knowhow and experience with train services, when preparing bids in Atlântico Norte in 2011 and in the coming years.

Till date, Comboios do Atlântico has been owned by the Lantean traffic company Companhia de Transportes Colectivos da Lantea - CTCL S.A. and the operator Viastar Railways S.A. Now, STPM takes over ViaStar Railways share in Comboios do Atlântico, while the remaining 40 per cent of the company's shares remain with CTCL S.A.

Comboios do Atlântico is a well run company and the acquisition fits in well with STPM's national and international strategy and offers new growth potential in Avalon's largest market for rail passenger transport. We also look forward to working together with Comboios do Atlântico other owner, CTCL S.A. and servicing our customers on every region - says STPM's CEO Marco Salgado.

Since 2005, Comboios do Atlântico has operated the urban/suburban lines in Lantea, since 2007 has operated the Intercities lines connecting all the regions and in January this year, Comboios do Atlântico also started operating the Omega line, which runs from Câmbria to Guimarães via Atlântida. The three contracts, which comprise 4.1 billion train kilometres a year and cover 915 kilometres.

Comboios do Atlântico is headquartered in Atlantico Norte's largest city, Atlântida, which is located in a central and strategically important part of Atlântico Norte in light of STPM's coming bid activities in the Atlantic market,« says Marco Salgado.

Comboios do Atlântico brand will be gradually be replaced with STPM brand and at the same time STPM is planning to gradually upgrade the quality standards to the ones you already see in STPM's rail service in Macaronesia, and gradually change the decision center to Cambria, where STPM is based.

With the entry in the national market, STPM is now building on the success we have already achieved in the region of Macaronesia. Even though the Atlantico Norte market is very complex and different from the Macaronesian market, because every region has it's peculiarities, but our strategy may well be compared to the strategy we have also used in Macaronesia. We start on a small scale to acquaint ourselves with the market, and with the new co-ownership, we gain a quick foothold and thereby create the best possible platform for future growth - says Marco Salgado.

Thus, in 2009 STPM won two additional franchises in Lemuria - the urban services and the interregional train between Lemuria and Lusoiberia. The two franchises were added to the services which STPM is already operating in Atlantico Norte, i.e. the urban/suburban services in Macaronesia as well all the train connections between Macaronesia and the other regions. This means that by the end of 2010, STPM is operating more train kilometres than any other company in Atlantico Norte, and 8 out of 10 passengers will be using STPM services.

STPM - Sociedade de Transportes Públicos da Macaronesia S.A has been renamed ANTrans S.A. There will be a rollout of the new image across all the ANTrans network during 5 to 6 months where every single information panel, leafet, train and even the uniforms will be rebranded - "We feel that the new brand better differentiates and defines our services in the marketplace. ANTrans will further expand on the services offered by the former STPM and Comboios do Atlântico, focusing on driving value in the areas of people and cargo transport, as well bidding on any new opportunities that may rise.
